Based on the Punjabi folklore “Challa” originating from Sandal Baar, a region between Chenab and Ravi in Pakistan.

Challa is a story of a sick boatman who fights with his son the night before he ferries across the river. His inexperienced son’s boat capsizes and he drowns, never to return home. The next morning the boatman is found on the riverbank wailing and mourning his son who he will never see again and the song begins.
